The next generation of the QX80 luxury SUV is just around the corner. The company introduced the Monograph concept and it won’t take too long until it hits production. The 2021 Infiniti QX80 is about to introduce a bunch of new things, including styling, interior features, and possibly a fresh engine. The upcoming SUV could be smaller than its predecessors. This won’t continue the trend. Infiniti is updating its flagship model every few years. When the QX80 hit the second generation in 2010, the SUV was 2 inches longer.
The 2021 Infiniti QX80 is going to be the largest model in the family. The latest generation of Nissan Armada is longer by 0.6 inches, and it is the only model larger than a premium vehicle. Still, the Monograph platform provides room for growth in all ways. First, the styling is bold and aggressive, exactly what the full-size SUV needs. Then, it leaves space for a hybrid upgrade. Finally, the new QX80 will adopt the next-gen infotainment system, which is going to be available on some Infiniti models already in 2021. Changes on the SUV will make it worth waiting.
Redesign, Monograph Concept
In 2018, the Japanese company introduced the new architecture, which was projected to be the future of big SUVs. Well, the first model that came to our mind was QX80. The vehicle needed an upgrade desperately. Its second generation was launched in 2010 and the SUV had three updates, the latest one in 2017. Now, when Infiniti announced there won’t be big changes for the 2020 season and the following year is going to introduce serious updates, we believe the largest model in the lineup is going to be based on the new concept.
The 2021 Infiniti QX80 will borrow interesting solutions from the Monograph architecture. Well, we won’t see 24-inch wheels on the base versions, but the idea is there. And it’s cool. A smooth windshield that fades into windows promises better aerodynamics. That is not all since air vents are huge, but also functional. The new design is not only stylish, but it will also boost performance. We can spot underbody protectors and special exhaust tips. How these will look like on the new QX80, fans will see late in 2020 when the first prototypes are about to come out.
2021 Infiniti QX80 Specs
There are no doubts – the new 2021 Infiniti QX80 will use the same engine as its predecessors. The Monograph concept introduced the new styling, but an old and reliable powerplant. A 5.6-liter V8 displacement is capable to produce 400 hp. Further styling improvements are going to boost the fuel economy. But, do not expect big things from this large and heavy rig. Its consumption will be 20 mpg on the highway, which we find a good result for this kind of vehicle.
The all-wheel drive is intelligent and distributes power to the axle that needs it the most. Otherwise, you can select a rear-wheel drive system. The towing capacity of the premium SUV remains around 8,500 pounds.
Dimensions, Cargo Space
The current QX80 is 208.3 inches long. According to estimations, the new Monograph concept was between 16 and 17 feet, and that is 204 inches in the best case. Well, we don’t believe the company is going to compress it further since buyers of big SUVs appreciate every inch of cargo space. So, with 4 in a shorter body, the 2021 Infiniti QX80 will be more agile, but still far away from the compact segment.
On the other hand, the body will get more lightweight materials. It will improve the fuel economy, without harming the overall performance. With 400+ horsepower, the QX80 will be among the most attractive vehicles in the class. Some experts believe the SUV could reach 9,000 pounds of towing capacity. Still, the interior room will suffer. Shorter body means less cargo space. We will see how designers are going to organize the cabin. Currently, the QX80 offers 95 cubic feet behind the first row.
2021 Infiniti QX80 Release Date
Nissan and Infiniti are updating models for the 2021 season. So, we can expect debuts during 2020. However, we still don’t know the order of appearance. The QX80 is definitely one of the most important vehicles that come next year, but there are also QX60, Nissan Pathfinder, and Titan truck. One thing is sure – the 2021 Infiniti QX80 will debut at some of the biggest auto shows in the US. Most fans believe it is going to happen in Detroit next summer, where the SUV can show off its skills in the new format of the show.
The price will jump a bit. Still, the model is going to be one of the most attractive with the cost under $70k. Most of its rivals are over $75k, including Lexus LX, Lincoln Navigator, and Mercedes GLS.
