The compact luxury crossover is selling well. But, Lexus wants to beat German rivals by delivering the second generation of the NX model. It will debut next year, and besides the redesign, we will also see the plug-in hybrid engine. The all-new 2021 Lexus NX 300 is going to be something special.
(Latest update: due to COVID-19 outburst, the new generation is postponed for 2022)
The crossover is very versatile. The petrol engine and hybrid unit are already part of the lineup. Plus, there is the F Sport package that will make the 2021 Lexus NX 300 more attractive. Now, the PHEV version is going to be available as the NX450h. This is not something new, since Toyota, the parent company, already launched the Rav4 Prime model.
NX 450h Plug-In Hybrid
Lexus is owned by Toyota. The Japanese company is a leader in the market when it comes to electrification. Their hybrid vehicles are dominating. For a long time, Highlander was the only three-row SUV with such configuration. The manufacturer carried it over to the Lexus lineup and the RX model. In the compact segment, for some while, Rav4 was the most efficient crossover with the gas mileage of over 40 mpg. Now, the competition is catching up and the Japanese giant needs to do something.
The response comes very soon after Ford beat the MPG average of the Rav4. The Prime version is going to be a plug-in hybrid with improved efficiency. More power is not going to cost you more fuel. The output reaches 300 hp. That is a 65-hp enhancement compared to the current version, and more than 100 ponies if we take the standard hybrid. A 2.5-liter four-cylinder unit serves as the base and sends power to all wheels through a CVT gearbox. Electric motors will be installed on the rear axle and the electric range of the setup will be nearly 40 miles.
2021 Lexus NX 300 Engines and Specs
The PHEV version is coming as the NX 450h. A vehicle with the 300 in the nameplate is powered by the conventional powerplant. It is a 2.0-liter turbo unit with 235 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. The transmission is a 6-speed auto and the standard setup sends power to front wheels. All-wheel drive is optional. The compact crossover is returning 25 mpg combined, with a 28 mpg highway rating.
The 2021 Lexus NX 300 hybrid will be a lighter version of the PHEV. A 2.5-liter engine comes in a pair with a lighter battery. The four-banger produces 155 ponies, and with the help of electric motors, it reaches 195 hp. A fuel economy was the best in the class for some while with 33/30 mpg. Now, with the PHEV model, buyers will have another, more efficient option.
2021 Lexus NX 300 Redesign
The new look is part of the next-gen 2021 Lexus NX 300. There are no details about the redesign, but this carmaker never fails. So, more aggressive and better-looking styling is going to lure more buyers. The grille is the highlight of the most Lexus vehicles. We can’t wait to see what will the front fascia look on the NX. The F Sport package is also enhancing the look of the crossover, but it is an optional upgrade.
2021 Lexus NX 300 Release Date and Price
Although the NX450h is under the spotlight, the standard model will be available from day 1. The company will wait for the COVID-19 outburst to calm down before they launch the new compact luxury SUV. We believe everything is ready for the premiere and the only question is when it is going to happen.
The price will go up, that is for sure. The new generation will add more features and equipment. Let’s not forget the new look. In total, that could push the 2021 Lexus NX 300 closer to $40,000. Lincoln Nautilus is more expensive, but it is not compact anymore. The hybrid version goes over this mark, as well as the NX300 F Sport. The new PHEV system will go even further, but not too far from $45,000.
