2021 Mazda CX-5

The new version of Mazda’s flagship model is just around the corner. The carmaker launched the current version in 2017 and the mid-cycle redesign is happening pretty often in the compact crossover class. Well, with the number of rivals, that is not a surprise. Some of the main competitors are selling over 400,000 units per annum. After the facelift, we can consider the 2021 Mazda CX-5 as one of the stars of the upcoming season.

There are many reasons why CX-5 became so popular. Unique styling with a huge grille and special colors are making the crossover eye-catching. The interior is pretty comfortable for the small model. Finally, there is a drivetrain you can’t find elsewhere. SkyActiv technology allows petrol engines to act like diesel units. The system takes the best from each version and converts it to the unique drive structure.

2021 Mazda CX-5 Specs

The facelift is definitely drawing attention, but the drivetrain of the 2021 Mazda CX-5 remains the biggest advantage of the crossover. A 2.5-liter four-cylinder unit is able to produce 187 horsepower and 190 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission and a front-wheel drive are standard. This version returns 28 miles per gallon thanks to the cylinder deactivation system. All-wheel drive is also optional. Towing capacity is 2,000 pounds.

A naturally-aspirated engine is not the only drivetrain. Engineers added turbochargers to maximize outputs. In case you want the 2021 Mazda CX-5 turbo, the crossover can return 250 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of twist unless you use regular gasoline. This way, the SkyActiv engine can make 225 hp. Fuel Economy takes damage and returns 25 mpg. Again, front- and all-wheel drive are options.

Diesel Engine

Mazda made a huge step by launching the diesel unit in the US market. It is a 2.2-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel. At 4,000 rpm it creates 170 horsepower, while the torque reaches a peak of 290 pound-feet at 2,000 rpm. Again, Mazda had an advantage over the competition with 28 mpg of the combined fuel economy. Only the all-wheel drive is available for crossovers with a diesel engine.

Hybrid

One thing the CX-5 is missing at this point. It is a hybrid engine. Well, the Japanese carmaker made a huge step by adding such technology to the subcompact segment. There are rumors that even the new CX-4 could be out as the hybrid version of its bigger brother. But, we believe that the company will use the popularity of the 2021 Mazda CX-5 to start the new era of its models.

The crossover is already fuel-efficient. With the hybrid system, the CX-5 could compete with leaders in this segment – Honda CR-V and Toyota Rav4. Both of these have a couple of things in common – their hybrid engines return over 40 mpg and their sales are above 400k. So, if any other carmaker wants to be successful, leading models could be the model.

2021 Mazda CX-5 Redesign

The facelift of the 2021 Mazda CX-5 is coming at the right time. The current version is already three years old and the first updates are on the way. Unfortunately, details about new styling will be available in the second quarter of the year. But, we can figure out some things if we take a look at the latest premieres by the company. The upcoming crossover won’t bring radical changes, but only updates that will refresh its appearance.

Interior

Speaking of the redesign, fans could expect more changes inside the vehicle. The compact crossover will keep dimensions, which means there are no improvements for the comfort and cargo space. Well, the small model has no room for such changes. On the other hand, more infotainment and safety features will make the 2021 Mazda CX-5 more reliable. With the durable engine, this should be a perfect combination.

The level of equipment in the crossover will depend on the trim. Buyers will definitely have options, with the current model offering five versions. Sport will remain the entry-level version with improved voice commands, which is cool for text messaging – both writing and listening.

If you are after more features, Touring and Grand Touring will load the 2021 Mazda CX-5 with plenty of options. Some premium features are going to be available, such as leather seats, LED lights, a power liftgate, and many others. Still, the top of the class version is Signature. It is available only with a turbo engine and plenty of other upgrades over all previous versions.

2021 Mazda CX-5 Price

The new 2021 Mazda CX-5 will keep the starting price of its predecessor to remain competitive. Most crossovers begin the offer with a $25k tag, and the Japanese carmaker is no different. However, if you decide to upgrade the base model, it will cost you between $3,000 and $15,000 for the fully-loaded Signature version.
