The company pairs the engine with a ten-speed Allison transmission. It is a difference-maker for diesel engines. Some say FCA is about to replace the AISIN gearbox with Allison. The towing capacity of this drivetrain is not as high as Ford’s Powerstroke and Ram’s EcoDiesel. But, for the luxury SUV, 9,000 pounds will be more than enough.
The petrol unit stays the same. It is the 6.2-liter V8 with the capability to deliver 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. The cost for such a high power output is a very poor fuel economy, which is not going to do better than 20 mpg on the highway. The cylinder deactivation system is there but doesn’t help a lot.
