One thing is sure, the 2022 Excursion is about to become the largest vehicle in the class. Currently, there are Chevy Suburban and Ford Expedition Max, with lengths over 220 inches. Back in the time, Excursion was the biggest SUV in the market. Now, we expect to see it at least 230 inches long. For such a huge SUV, the company needs a lot of power. A brand-new V8 is there to offer 430 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. On the other hand, Ford is also well-known for its Powerstroke diesel units. We doubt that engineers will go with a V8.
The Super Duty truck lineup is new. The carmaker recently updated F-250 and F-350 models and the upcoming 2022 Ford Excursion is going to borrow design solutions from its closest siblings. The SUV is not going to have the competition since only General Motors is making LWB vehicles. Toyota and Nissan are also in the full-size SUV segment, but neither of these Japanese companies is offering a heavy-duty truck. On the other hand, Jeep Grand Wagoneer is about to be launched, and FCA could make a special version based on the Ram 2500 Power Wagon truck.
Expectations
The SUV market is growing. COVID-19 outburst slowed things down, but companies are recovering. Many of them decided to put all the projects on hold, and it might be a reason why the Excursion is not coming even in 2021. Still, if this huge rig happens, it will be worth of waiting.

Raptor version is not going to happen, and the best off-road features we might get should be the Tremor. This package is available with the F-250 truck and it was supposed to be a rival to the Ram Power Wagon.
Powertrains
In the search for the perfect drivetrain for the 2022 Ford Excursion, we narrowed the selection to a few V8 units. The new 7.3-liter engine is the most likely option. Even before its arrival, some experts claimed it will be the powerplant for the 2022 Ford Excursion. Well, the first step is done – the engine is here. Now, we will see if the SUV comes as well. The unit is one of the drivetrains for the Super Duty class. With 430 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, it provides enough energy for the toughest challenges. Well, don’t expect a generous gas mileage, since the SUV is going to be the heaviest model Ford ever produced. Neither Expedition is returning a breath-taking mpg rating.
An old 6.2-l V8 is also an option, but it is going to be dropped for the F-250 soon. Still, with 375 hp and 430 lb-ft, it can be still a good optional powerplant. Ford is keen on turbocharged units, but there is no way a V6 turbo can meet expectations from Excursion buyers. Even Expedition is the only full-size SUV without an eight-cylinder mill.
2022 Ford Excursion Diesel
The 2022 Ford Excursion Diesel is not going to be a surprise at all. The company is active in this segment and there are two options the SUV can get. A lighter variant is a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder oil burner we can find under the hood of the F-150 pickup. With 260 hp and 450 lb-ft, it might be a good option. But, for the Super Duty class, that is not enough.
On the other hand, a 6.7-liter turbo-eight is a monster. With 450 hp and 1,000+ lb-ft of torque, it will be definitely the most capable drivetrain in the SUV segment. But, this energy is used for heavy-duty towing and we doubt anyone needs this kind of vehicle to haul 30,000 pounds. Trucks are a way better option if you are looking for such potential. However, this might be an engine for bragging and extreme off-road adventures.
2022 Ford Excursion Release Date
The entire situation with the COVID-19 slowed the development of new models. We haven’t seen any car show recently, and predictions for 2021 are not promising either. But, Ford will figure out something about how to make the debut of the 2022 Excursion interesting. The premiere is going to happen in mid-2021, and the production will start closer to 2022. The price of $60,000 seems to be rational since the Expedition costs $54,000.
