The 2022 GMC Yukon is the largest vehicle in the lineup. Well, there is a long-wheelbase version of the full-size SUV called Yukon XL. In this case, buyers are getting extra room behind rear seats. Nevertheless, the drivetrains and trim packages stay the same. The SUV is a three-row model with eight or seven seats. The most luxurious model is Denali with a premium offer. The most powerful engine is a 6.2-liter V8, available for several trims. We are waiting for updates about a hybrid drivetrain. Yukon will also offer an oil-burner as the alternative.
The full-size SUV market is not as wide as for example the compact crossover class. Here, we find the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban, as mechanical twins of the 2022 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL. Then, there are Ford Expedition, Toyota Sequoia, and Nissan Armada. German premium carmakers are offering luxury vehicles, as well as Lexus, Infiniti, Lincoln… However, these SUVs will cost significantly more and GMC is considered as a posh side of the GM twins.
Under the Hood 2022 GMC Yukon
The full-size SUV needs a lot of power. General Motors don’t have problems here. A 5.3-liter V8 is a reliable unit that is also available in other big rigs. It can produce 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. A 10-speed auto gearbox is a power router and buyers will choose between RWD and 4WD. Plus, the new Yukon is going to offer a cylinder deactivation system. It shuts down cylinders and use 2-8, demanding on the need. It improves gas mileage. Nevertheless, the big SUV can’t do better than 20 mph (on highways).
The same transmission is paired with a 6.2-liter V8. This is the biggest unit outside the commercial and heavy-duty segment. High-end trim levels are getting a powertrain that develops 420 hp and 460 lb-ft. Again, rear- and four-wheel drive are options. A larger unit is consuming more fuel, returning 15/20 mpg at its best. Four-wheel drive and XL upgrades will make it even worse. But, when buying a full-size SUV, you know the expectations from fuel economy are low.
Still, the 2022 GMC Yukon Diesel fixes the impression a bit. Duramax powerplant is good for 21 mpg in city, while on highways you can get up to 27 mpg (26 mpg with 4WD). A 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 debuted on Silverado truck. Now, it became available in the SUV class. The engine produces 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque.
Trim Levels, Options, Accessories
There are two base and two “special” trims available for the new Yukon. The SLE is the entry-level version. Highlights of this package are availability of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, parking cameras, driver aid system with pedestrian detection and lane keep assist, and cruise control package. If you decide to upgrade it, the 2022 GMC Yukon SLT will add about $8,000 in features and options. Heated front seats and perforated leather are making the SUV more convenient and comfortable. Special controls for the middle row and availability of captain’s chairs can definitely make the Yukon a special vehicle.
Both packages are available with an extended body layout. The 2022 GMC Yukon XL The wheelbase of the standard version is 121 inches long, 5 in more than the previous generation, while the overall length is 210 in. the XL version adds more than 15 inches. Converted to cargo space, that is 20 cu.ft. of extra space (145 cubic-feet total). With all seats up, LWB model will offer 39, and the base one 25.5 cu.ft.
Going Off-Road? 2022 GMC Yukon AT4 Will Impress You
If you are going to look at the high-end options, two models with different purposes will try to turn the attention to themselves. Fans of the off-road drive now have another cool model for adventures. The 2022 GMC Yukon AT4 stands for all-terrain 4×4 and you can already guess what kind of upgrades it brings. The 4WD gets a 2-speed transfer case and off-road mode as one of the selections for traction. 20-inch wheels set is wrapped with all-terrain rubber. Heated seats and steering wheel are standard. This already becomes an exclusive offer, but there is one premium model in the lineup with hotter equipment.
2022 GMC Yukon Denali
Of course, like on all GMC vehicles, the 2022 GMC Yukon Denali is the top of the class version. For the full-size SUV, this package includes a large 6.2-liter engine as the main source of power. That already adds a significant price boost. HD cameras, huge HUD and touchscreen displays, advanced safety features, upscale materials, and many more additions will improve the impression of this lineup.
You can replace the gasoline engine with a diesel unit. Denali XL is also available and such an upgrade will cost you $3,000. The base Denali version starts just under $70,000. The entry-level SLE has an MSRP of $52,000, without the destination.
