Full Review: All-New 2022 VW Tiguan – Interior, R, Specs, Hybrid

The new 2022 VW Tiguan is coming with significant changes, outside and inside. The company unveiled what is new on the upcoming crossover, but we doubt that all the details were announced. Volkswagen is keeping some tabs open and fans are sure an additional version will be available shortly after the release of the standard lineup.

For now, we know that exterior styling is revisited. The redesign makes the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan modern, more appealing than ever, and aggressive. Wheels, side skirts, front grille, and rear end are refreshed. It is hard to say if these updates or interior changes are more interesting. The layout is new inside the cabin. However, the base version is not going to impress. But, all the higher trims are coming with some advanced technology.

Further updates on the crossover might include a hybrid drivetrain or even an all-electric version. Volkswagen is in the advanced stages of development of its ID Crozz concept and the first models will roll out from plants very soon. Also, rumors about the performance 2022 VW Tiguan R package are louder. The crossover would be based on the Golf R edition. Finally, some markets offer Tiguan Allspace with three rows of seats. This one is not coming to the US, where the only seven-seater by Volkswagen is Atlas.

2022 VW Tiguan Engines and Trim Levels

A 2.0-liter turbo-four remains under the bonnet of the upcoming 2022 VW Tiguan. For now, it seems like the only option for US dealerships. Volkswagen will have to offer something else to stay competitive and keep the market value. Still, a turbo-four works nice, and it is a refresh compared to naturally-aspirated powerplants. It delivers 185 hp and 220 lb-ft of torque, returning more than 30 mpg on highways. The redesign brings lighter materials, which are going to make Tiguan’s weight drop. The improvement of gas mileage is an ultimate goal. All-wheel drive is harming the mpg rating. On the other hand, the 4Motion system is one of the best out there.

S, SE and SEL trim levels are the base versions of the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan. The company will add additional packages, such as R-Line. Do not mix it with the performance-oriented Tiguan R. New features, colors, and options are going to be available, making the build more fun.

2022 VW Tiguan R Specs and Upgrades

So, the 2022 VW Tiguan R seems to be the most anticipated model of the upcoming lineup. Still, this one is yet to be confirmed. On the other hand, we can compare it to the most popular car with this package, the VW Golf hatchback. The best-selling vehicle offers an ultimate upgrade. The highlight is a turbocharged 2.0-liter mill capable of delivering 300 horsepower. Engineers could tune it to create even more. Of course, extra power will require support from the drive system. So, the new configuration will also bring a revisited setup of suspension, brakes, exhaust system.

The interior is going to be packed with the latest features. Safety and driver assistance are priorities. Multi-zone climate control, lane-keep assist and a lane-departure warning will be standard. The company will leave some accessories available for further upgrades on the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan R.

Interior, Colors

The cabin of the crossover also draws a lot of attention. Larger touchscreen displays are spotted on prototypes. However, the base S model is going to offer smaller screens. A three-row 2022 VW Tiguan Allspace is not coming to the US. Digital gauges are also interesting. One of the highlights is an updated color palette. New paintjobs for the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan are Oryx White and Kings Red. The company will keep most of the other colors which are already in use.

When Will 2022 VW Tiguan be Available?

The crossover is official. The company unveiled the new Tiguan and the release schedule. The German company will make it available this summer but in Europe. Dealerships in other markets are going to wait for it a bit more. Sales of the 2022 VW Tiguan in the US will start in the fall. We’ll see by then what else the carmaker is ready to offer. A hybrid unit is the most likely to keep pace with domestic and Japanese crossovers.

Prices, Competition

Leading carmakers in the compact crossover segment are Toyota, Ford, Honda, Nissan. Volkswagen couldn’t rival the best-selling models, especially with a poor resale value of an old Tiguan. We will see if the new version is capable to do more than its predecessor. However, it will be hard, mainly because of the single engine choice. For example, Toyota Rav4 is already bringing PHEV configuration, while hybrid versions of Honda CR-V and Ford Escape are class leaders in the fuel economy standards. By moving the production of the Tiguan to Mexico, VW managed to get the price lowered to a competitive level. The redesign will make it go up. Still, the all-new 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan remains under $26,000 in the base form.
