Multiple sources are reporting big news about the 2023 Mazda CX-5. According to Autoblog, the crossover is becoming a luxury crossover, a rival to BMW cars. Inside sources of Autoevolution say that the CX-5 is going to bring a more powerful engine with six cylinders. Finally, Mazda filed for the registration of the CX-50 nameplate. Sources say this might be the EV.
The redesign will make the crossover more appealing, that is for sure. In the compact crossover market, we see a lot of changes frequently. But, Mazda hasn’t updated its flagship model. We heard that the comeback of the CX-7 is possible, but the spotlight is on the 2023 Mazda CX-5. A hybrid unit is also an option and one of the must-have options for the foreseeable future if the Japanese company wants to stay competitive.
Packages
We expect to see a similar lineup of models of the 2023 Mazda CX-5. Sport is the entry-level version. In two years, there will be a lot of changes in the automotive industry. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will be the main services for connectivity to smart devices. Since the crossover might become a luxury model, more upscale materials will be used for the interior. Also, Mazda will have to improve the systems and features in all trim levels. A large 10-inch infotainment screen is sitting at the center dashboard. We don’t think it is becoming bigger, but the new edition of the multimedia system might be ready by 2023. Outside, 17-inch wheels are the highlights and the company is going to offer 18-, 19-, and 20-inch rims optionally. Even with the upgraded styling and more exclusive interior, there will be more available upgrades.
Touring and Grand Touring will remain the mid-range packages. Since the 2023 Mazda CX-5 is becoming a premium vehicle, most of the accessories are going to be available at the Sport level. Premium leather, intelligent safety options, more driver-aid features, and exterior trims will make these two recognizable.
The top tier is Signature. We’ll see what will be left for this edition. Premium audio by Bose with at least 10 speakers, Nappa leather upholstery, navigation, and many signature trims and details will make the top trim level pretty luxurious. Well, it is already the premium model with special wheels and the price tag close to $40,000.
2023 Mazda CX-5 Hybrid and I6 Engines
We already got used to the SkyActiv engines. Efficient and clean, these are the main reason why Mazda’s crossovers became so popular. A 2.5-liter four-cylinder unit is there for 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque. With 25/31 mpg, it will definitely come back for the 2023 Mazda CX-5. Most compact crossovers are using powerplants with similar outputs. The front-wheel drive might be replaced with the RWD configuration. If the CX-5 becomes the luxury crossover, buyers will expect more power. A 2.5-liter unit can be turbocharged and make 250 hp with the premium fuel. The gas mileage is not suffering too much, returning 22/27 mpg. The lighter body might lead to an even better fuel economy.
But, the engineers will work on the 2023 Mazda CX-5 Hybrid, which will get on the line with Toyota Rav4 and Ford Escape with 40 mpg. On the other hand, two leaders in sales are also getting the PHEV system with extra power and electric range. Still, the hybrid is not announced yet, while the CX-50 is expected to be the EV. 2023 Mazda CX-5 Release Date
