The Japanese company made a strong impact with this SUV. However, the Ascent is going to need a facelift soon. The vehicle debuted as the 2019 YM. Favorite things about the 2023 Subaru Ascent will still be AWD as the standard system, seating capacity for eight persons, excellent safety and driver-aid equipment, and a pretty large cargo area. On the other hand, the third row is only suitable for children and it lacks legroom. We already mentioned that the lack of alternatives to a four-cylinder engine is a downside.
Is the 2023 Subaru Ascent Underpowered?

Experts don’t think the upcoming SUV could bring a six-pot engine or a hybrid. But, in the future, with the redesign in 2024 or 2025, this is a good thing to start with. On the other hand, Subaru discontinued all large drivetrains and now the turbo-four with 260 hp is the most potent configuration we see from them in the crossover SUV world. A hybrid version might upgrade the power output of a flat-four setup. Still, it is a four-cylinder engine and Ascent is a large SUV.
2023 Subaru Ascent Onyx and Wilderness
There are two versions of the SUV that are a bit different than others. Onyx was added for the 2022 YM. It immediately drew attention as the mid-range offer. The base from where other upgrades are being added is the Premium trim. Then, the 2023 Subaru Ascent Onyx adds SynTex seats, 20-inch wheels, a blacked-out grille, and a power tailgate.
The 2023 Subaru Ascent Wilderness is becoming the new member of the lineup. This package debuted on the Forester crossover, and now many other models are being mentioned to get this off-road bundle. Increased ground clearance, unique wheels with all-terrain tires, retuned X-Mode with extra functions, and a 180-degree front-view monitor are some of the upgrades we expect from the Wilderness model. Ascent could get even more.
Other Trim Levels
Besides the most popular versions, the 2023 Ascent is going to keep the rest of the lineup unchanged. Well, there will be updates of each package, with more advanced technologies included. Even the base package is going to deliver X-Mode, 8 seating spots, an EyeSight system, and 18-inch alloy wheels. Premium model adds climate control for rear seats, Wi-Fi hotspot, and heated front seats. Optionally, you can replace the bench in the second row with the captain’s chairs.
The 2023 Subaru Ascent Limited can be considered as the high-end option. Leather upholstery improves comfort and makes cabin more elegant. The SUV is more aggressive thanks to large 20-inch wheels. Rear seats also get heating, and the front row is ventilated. Diver’s bucket features a memory function. A power tailgate is also standard. The only model that can top this is Touring. Captain’s chairs in the second row are replacing bench, Harman Kardon audio is added, and panoramic sunroof makes a statement.
2023 Subaru Ascent Prices and Release Date
The new model for 2023 will be out soon. The company is going to start selling the new Ascent later in 2022. Wilderness model should be positioned between Touring and Limited, with the price around $40,000. The Limited edition is slightly cheaper, while the Touring is above $45,000. For $32,500 the base version is available. Premium model adds $2,500 in features. Onyx is $2,000 cheaper than Limited.
Mid-Cycle Redesign
The 2023 YM is not bringing major changes, but the Ascent is close to the mid-cycle facelift. The SUV is on the market for 5 years. The front grille, tail, wheels, bumpers, headlights, will make a fresh appearance. The interior is also important, but there is plenty of time before the all-new SUV shows up.
