The largest SUV ever built might be back again. With the growth of the SUV segment, it is just a question of time when will the 2024 Ford Excursion return. We have a lot of subclasses between subcompact EcoSport crossover, and a full-size Expedition SUV. Plus, there is a luxury Lincoln segment. As the company is willing to make radical changes, Ford is definitely thinking about bringing back the heavy-duty SUV.
Like its predecessor, the 2024 Ford Excursion would be based on the F-250 truck. We already see it using a similar styling language. The vehicle will pick the best things of the two classes it combines. The versatility comes from the Expedition, while the capabilities will be inherited from the Super Duty lineup. Well, we doubt it can get a big turbodiesel engine, but let’s keep that option open. Definitely, a new 6.8-liter unit is a favorite.
Like all Ford SUVs, there will be plenty of options available for heavy-duty SUV. The base offer is not going to impress, but high-end grades, such as Platinum or Limited, could make a home on the wheels from the 2024 Ford Excursion. While there are no doubts about luxury accessories, we are looking for more details about off-road packages. Ford can offer a lot of upgrades – from the base FX4, the cool Tremor, or the ultimate Raptor edition.
2024 Ford Excursion Specs, Diesel, Towing Capacity
We are pretty sure that the 2024 Ford Excursion is going to use the new powertrain for the Super Duty trucks. A 6.8-liter mill gives an edge to the HD SUV over the Excursion, which uses a 3.5-l twin-turbo V6. It might produce more power (450 hp) and torque (510 lb-ft), but a V8 is what we want to see under the hood of the Excursion.
Specs of the new engine are still undisclosed. But, we can figure it out. As a lighter version of the 7.3-liter V8 mill, it won’t put out 430 hp. On the other hand, it replaces a 6.2-liter V8 with 385 hp, so a higher output is not questioned. Let’s say the upcoming V8 will be somewhere between 400 and 410 horsepower. The plant is highly capable, like its larger sibling, the popular Godzilla configuration. Even a 7.3-liter unit is not too old, but it became fans’ favorite very quickly.
A 6.7-liter turbodiesel can offer 450 hp and more than 1,000 lb-ft of torque. But, it is available for the Super Duty trucks that need to tow heavy loads. The towing capacity of the 2024 Ford Excursion won’t be so high. Still, expect more than 12,000 lbs with a 6.8-l V8. A 3.0-liter Powerstroke oil burner is discontinued for the F-150 truck, so don’t expect it back on the new vehicles. Also, 260 hp and 450 lb-ft is not something to impress fans of the heavy-duty SUV.
What Will 2024 Ford Excursion Look Like?
The fifth generation of the Super Duty segment is debuting this year. That is the perfect reason to believe the 2024 Ford Excursion is coming back. As the truck-based SUV, it will borrow the architecture and styling of the F-250 model. Still, the company needs to modify the vehicle and make it useful. The previous stint was not successful, since buyers gave up because of the high consumption. A 6.8-liter engine will improve the mileage, but don’t expect miracles. The main purpose of the Excursion will be towing.
Anyway, as the SUV, it must be different from the trucks. So, comfort, safety, and other amnesties are about to get a boost compared to the Super Duty class. We’ll follow the first impressions about the new Super Duty trucks. But, soon after the spotlights start to fade away, the company will be ready to launch another vehicle for headlines. That will be the 2024 Ford Excursion. So, fans should be patient and wait.
Trucks will cost more than before. The F-250 is expected around $45,000 with the Regular Cab, but it is better to compare the Excursion to the F-250 Crew Cab. That is a $5,000 upgrade over the base configuration. Then, we must compare it to the Expedition. A smaller SUV starts off at $55,000 and the bigger vehicle can’t be cheaper. So, having all this in mind, our estimations are that the base price of the heavy-duty SUV will be around $60,000.
