2024 Hyundai Kona Full Review, All Models and Drivetrains

Three versions of the 2024 Hyundai Kona will be available. The base version is one of the most affordable crossovers you can buy for under $25,000. As a subcompact vehicle, Kona won’t draw attention with the performance or size. But, the Kona N is a boosted version that features a 20.-liter 275-hp rated turbo-four engine. Finally, an all-electric drivetrain is also out. Kona is one of the oldest EVs, but it is going to face more competition in next few years.

The original model from 2017 was updated in 2020. The 2024 Hyundai Kona stays the same and the next-gen crossover is about to debut after this edition. The vehicle is still competitive, but the EV needs improvements with the upcoming competition bringing new technologies. Also, the standard version should be revisited again to bring fresh styling, features and technology.

Specs and Equipment

Under the bonnet of the 2024 Kona is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 147 hp and 132 lb-ft of torque. The subcompact crossover also offers an all-wheel drive as the optional system. Those configurations are available for the entry-level models, SE and SEL. The base package includes 16-inch wheels, 8-in screen and 6-speaker audio. The SEL brings more options, such as remote engine start, roof rails, keyless entry, blind-spot monitor and 17-inch wheels.

Upper chart of trim levels adds N Line and Limited models. The main upgrade is a 1.6-liter turbo-four engine with 195 hp and 195 lb-ft. A 7-speed DCT replaces the CVT gearbox. Furthermore, the N Line is a lighter version of the Kona N. It uses similar features, such as premium cloth upholstery, a Convenience package, special wheels, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and a large 10-inch touchscreen. Limited trim beats this with leather seats, adaptive cruise control, parking sensors at both ends, and the Tech Package.

2024 Hyundai Kona N

The new top of the range version of the subcompact crossover is the 2024 Hyundai Kona N. There is a reason why this model costs $5k more than the Limited. The performance-oriented vehicle features a 2.0-liter turbo engine with 275 hp and 290 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed DCT works smoother with this unit. The Tech package is standard. The company also enhances the performance with special tires on a set of 19-inch wheels. Of course, more powerful brakes and sport exhaust will push the drive impression to the next level. Traction is maximized thanks to the electronic limited-slip differential, as well as the aerodynamic body kit with a rear spoiler. Drive modes are also available. Inside, the Kona N comes with leather upholstery, sports seats, lumbar support and blue details.

2024 Hyundai Kona Electric

The EV is as popular as the Kona N. Although in market for a few years, the technology this crossover is using is still advanced. Electric vehicles are taking over the market, but it is a long process. We still don’t see the end of diesel engines, and it will take even more for the EVs to shut down the production of petrol drivetrains.

Hyundai will be ready for the next step in the evolution. The 2024 Kona Electric is powered by motors that can provide 258 miles on a single charge. Well, some real-world tests showed you can go up to 300 miles. This powerplant can provide 201 hp and 291 lb-ft of torque. Hyundai is improving its recharging system. Currently, it needs 47 minutes to restore the battery from 10 to 80 percent. If you do it at home, a complete recharge takes 9.5 hours. The warranty for the 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric is probably the biggest reason why you should buy the vehicle. The company offers a 10-year/100,000-mile coverage.

There are no too many crossovers you can buy under $25,000. One of them is the 2024 Hyundai Kona. Both packages with a 2.0 naturally-aspirated engine will stay under this limit. The N Line requires an investment because of a more potent engine and the Limited model hits a $30k price tag with a few upgrades. The 2024 Kona N is the most expensive model with a 2.0-liter turbo unit. The subcompact crossover is priced at $34,000. However, there are no too many vehicles in this class that can offer 275 hp and the performance of the Kona N.

Finally, there is the EV with a starting price of around $33,500. SEL and Limited models are available. The second one is packed with high-end options and exceeds $40,000. Some of the alternatives for the 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric are Kia Niro EV, Chevy Bolt EUV, or Toyota bz4x. Soon, Honda Prologue and Subaru Solterra will be available as well. In a few years, this market will dominate the automotive industry. By 2030, many companies plan discontinuation of conventional systems with internal combustion engines.
