The next-gen SUV will be called the 2024 Lexus GX 550. It replaces the GX460 and the first speculations are already here. Only the trademark request was enough. However, we know some things that should change for the mid-size premium SUV. A big V8 engine is pretty thirsty and inefficient. So, a smaller six-cylinder unit should fix issues. Nevertheless, fans will have to wait a few months until the all-new GX shows up and the company announces a complete specs sheet.
The new engine is definitely a highlight, but just one of many. Fresh styling is also on the way. Again, there are no details about the upcoming vehicle, so we don’t know what the 2024 Lexus GX 550 will look like. We can make comparisons to other novelties in the crossovers and SUVs lineups, such as RX and LX. But, since the GX is coming out a couple of seasons later, there will be improvements for sure.
Next-Gen vs Discontinuation
There were a lot of rumors about the future of the GX. For a long time the company didn’t redesign it. Finally, fans started to get worried and think what are Lexus plans. Then, the new project sparked even more rumors. The Lexus TX is the new nameplate and we are still guessing what it could be. But, most experts thought it will replace the GX.
Like for those rumors, only a small detail was needed to turn things around. That is the trademark request for the GX 550. So, the replacement is on the way, and the number usually indicates a new drivetrain. However, Lexus is dropping an old-school nomenclature where the number indicates the engine under the hood. We had the RX 350 with a 3.5-liter engine, LX 570 with a 5.7-l V8, and the GX 460 with a 4.6-liter displacement. Now, the LX 600 is using a turbocharged six-cylinder unit. The 2024 Lexus GX 550 won’t get a 5.5-liter mill for sure.
2024 Lexus GX 550 Specs
So, now we can only think about the new drivetrain for the 2024 Lexus GX 550. A 4.6-liter V8 is definitely not an option anymore. In some markets, you can find a diesel, but the US model doesn’t feature an oil burner. So, a smaller block is replacing a V8. But, the displacement is still unknown. Toyota and Lexus are using a new system – the I Force setup. It shows well under the hood of the LX. A bit downpowered, it can serve as the drivetrain for the mid-size GX.
On the other hand, the RX is coming out with a turbocharged four-cylinder with enough power. But, downgrading from a V8 to four cylinders would make drivers mad. This won’t happen, that is for sure. Still, we are waiting for the Lexus TX to show up and take the spot in the lineup. Another certain thing is a hybrid configuration. The Japanese manufacturer is leaning toward complete electrification, and such configurations are just a step closer to the ultimate goal.
2024 Lexus GX 550 Release Date and Price
The new SUV is on the way, that’s a fact. But, everything else is a mystery. The redesign is already late. The second generation of the mid-size SUV was introduced in 2009 and 15 years in the market is a long period of time. Updates and facelifts were refreshing the GX, but the new GX 550 will be the most serious change. The company will announce details as soon as they obtain trademark rights. In the past few occasions, the production of such products started pretty quickly. Public expect to see the SUV in 2024.
The price will climb compared to the current version, that is for sure. But, we can’t be more precise. The MSRP is going to depend on the drivetrain and hybrid system, trim levels, and the size. We believe that the 2024 Lexus GX 550 continues to take the mid-size luxury SUV slot. Also, we are monitoring the situation with the Land Cruiser Prado, an overseas relative to the GX. Also, the non-luxury variant is coming out soon as well – the Toyota 4Runner.
