The 2024 Volvo EX90 will be an all-electric SUV with zero-emission technology. Spy photos of the new vehicle are already available, meaning the sales are about to start soon. The EX90 belongs to the mid-size segment, but it has a different platform from the XC90. The concept was introduced in 2021, and it didn’t take long to Volvo to start building the new SUV.
This is probably the first model in the EX- series, although the Swedish company is not announcing further moves. But, as they promised, the first 2024 Volvo EX90 is already on the way. We expect the sales to start by the end of the year. It will be interesting to see if the two-row four-seater is going to be available outside China. The company promoted the EX90 Excellence version at Shanghai Auto Show shortly after the announcement of the standard SUV.

The new platform can hold big batteries, so the 2024 Volvo EX90 can go up to 300 miles on a single charge. Nevertheless, the carmaker won’t squeeze everything from the base model, which will probably feature smaller motors and a shorter range. The company is also working on fast chargers. Current estimations say we can expect a 10-80 percent charge in just 30 mins. However, that is possible with 250-kW power. Home outlets won’t be so fast. Also, the recharging stations network still needs to grow.

The SPA2 platform underpins the new electric SUV. Besides an excellent range, the EX90 will also provide superb ride quality. The official version is the Twin Motor with 400 hp and 565 lb-ft of torque. Well, the twist power is calculated different for EVs. In real life, that is not so high.
The Performance package boosts numbers on the specifications sheet. The EX90 can do up to 510 hp. However, we will see the E2 model in the US, with 495 horsepower. The SUV can go faster, but engineers will limit the top speed to 112 mph (180 km/h). According to predictions, the EV will need around 5 seconds for a 0-60 mph acceleration.
Competition and Alternatives
The electric segment is growing. Every year we see more EVs on the roads. Volvo is one of the leaders in this class and the company whose ultimate goal is to build zero-emission vehicles only, as soon as possible. Of course, other companies are also in the game. Tesla is so far the leader, with intuitive technology and innovative solutions. Model X is becoming old and the 2024 Volvo EX90 should be more affordable. Nevertheless, Toyota is also entering the segment with the bZ4X model, and the same platform will be used for the premium Lexus vehicles. Another interesting, but smaller luxury electric SUV, is Genesis GV60.
Autonomous Drive System and Other Advanced Options
As we got used to Volvo, they pay a lot of attention to safety. EVs are also packed with innovative and intuitive technologies and gadgets, so it will be interesting to see how far the EX90 can go with those. Of course, the entry-level model won’t go all-in. On the other hand, picking those options can be quite expensive. But, if it makes the ride more comfortable and safer, then it’s worth it.
For now, the best autonomous drive is still at level 2, out of 5. Many companies are promising a higher level of self-driving, but it is not quite simple to let the computer totally control the vehicle and take you to the destination without worries. If you should have trust in any carmaker, that should be Volvo. The upcoming electric SUV is the perfect vehicle for the introduction of advanced tech. However, fans will have to wait to see what the 2024 Volvo EX90 is offering.
2024 Volvo EX90 Price and Release Date
And the waiting is near the end. It didn’t take too long for the carmaker to build the EV. The first appearance of EX90 was in 2021. Now, the SUV is in production and sales should start later this year. The price starts from $80,000. If this is too much, the XC40 is an alternative for $54,000. But, specs and space are sacrificed. In the future, Volvo will definitely build more EVs and expand the EX lineup.
