Volkswagen is launching the third generation of its small crossover. The first spy photos are here, but a lot of details are still unknown. The front grille is not too big, which reminds us of some sedans by German carmakers. There will be even more changes inside the cockpit. In the US, this is a crossover with five seats. In some markets, you can find the Allspace variant with the third row. The 2024 VW Tiguan R might also debut with the third generation, as the performance edition.
The company wants to make its vehicle more competitive in the US market, it is not a secret. Also, Volkswagen is about to expand its offer. Not only that electric vehicles are coming, but also more crossovers, SUVs, and even pickup truck. There are no too many details about new models and it seems that the 2024 VW Tiguan is a priority. The compact crossover is debuting in mid-2023.
Engine and Specs
In the US, the only available powertrain for the Tiguan was a 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine. In other markets, the crossover also uses diesel units, and of course, a hybrid setup. Oil burners are not an option for the United States. But, the eHybrid system would definitely improve the chances of the 2024 VW Tiguan in the tough market.
Nevertheless, a 2.0-liter mill is staying the base configuration. For the next-gen crossover, it should deliver more power. So, the Tiguan might hit 200 hp with this one. A seven-speed DSG transmission is one of the most reliable systems. Front-wheel drive is standard and the crossover will also offer AWD as an optional upgrade.
There are also other possibilities, such as a 1.6-liter mill with 150 hp. But, this is the setup for the European market.
2024 VW Tiguan eHybrid
Interesting thing – the hybrid system for the compact crossover is centered around a 1.4-liter petrol engine. The battery adds extra power and helps it achieve 240 horsepower. An automatic transmission is standard. Owners report that the crossover returns around 32 mpg (converted to the US measures). The new generation of the Tiguan will be lighter and probably more efficient. Also, engineers will revisit the PHEV system that was also able to make the crossover go 26 miles on electric power only. Well, that is a good starting point for the new hybrid. Ultimately, we can expect the Tiguan EV. The ID concept is already delivering the first all-electric crossovers.
2024 VW Tiguan Facelift
From spy photos, we can find out that the front fascia is new. The grille is smaller than before and Volkswagen added boomerang DRLs. This is not the first time the 2024 VW Tiguan has been spotted. But, compared to previous appearances, this time we can see more details. The company tried to hide new accents, but the latest prototype unveiled a few more details, such as totally new lights, front and back. Experts and hard-core fans say the test mule is larger than its predecessor. It will add more room inside, but we still can’t figure out how it can affect the driving experience.
2024 VW Tiguan R
The performance version of the compact crossover is another option. A 2.0-liter four-pot mill can be turbocharged to crack 300 horsepower (or even more). A 7-pace DSG is a gearbox and the 2024 VW Tiguan R will get an all-wheel drive. But, without an official statement, we can’t make conclusions. For example, Tiguan’s larger sibling, Touareg, is hiding the PHEV configuration under the hood of the R version. On the other hand, its US sibling, Volkswagen Atlas, is yet to get this badge.
Release Date and Price
Spy photos are definitely showing the launching of the 2024 VW Tiguan is near. But, the company won’t rush and bring it too soon in 2023. It can also happen in 2024 for the US market. That wouldn’t be the first time European carmakers released their vehicles in domestic markets first and then offer them to others.
The price after the redesign will definitely go up. Currently, the Tiguan costs $28,000. The new version will be close to $30,000 in the base form. SE and SEL stay optional packages, with R-Line as the upgrade on both trim levels. The 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan R is the new top of the range version, which is heavily loaded with advanced features. This one comes with a premium price tag of at least $55,000. It is more expensive than the Audi Q5 luxury crossover.
