2021 Porsche Macan Changes, Next-Gen Announced, EV is Coming

We were never in doubt that the compact Porsche Macan will catch up with the popularity of its larger sibling, Cayenne. Now, it seems that the future brings some novelties that will put the crossover ahead. Nevertheless, we will have to wait for the new generation and the all-electric vehicle. Meanwhile, the 2021 Porsche Macan will be mostly unchanged, with the only minor tuning of its trim levels and safety equipment. With a wide offer, we won’t find a lack of any feature or configuration.

The 2021 Porsche Macan will have it all – stylish design, premium interior, plenty of options and power. On the other side, there is a hefty price. But, we expect that from the exotic carmaker, the first one to bring the game to the SUV class. The biggest competition for the Macan is coming from its homeland, Germany. Mercedes GLC and BMW X3 can respond with base and high-end offers.

For the upcoming season, the priority is Cayenne and its Turbo GTS version. A similar package could be there for Macan but after 2022. In less than two years, the new generation is going to debut, and the highlight of the compact crossover will be the EV edition.

Base Offer

The 2021 Porsche Macan is using a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Power output of 248 hp and 273 lb-ft is something we expect from the luxury crossover. A seven-speed automatic DPK gearbox is sending power to all four corners. A fuel economy is poor. Macan will return only 19/23 mpg. 18-inch wheels are standard for the base model, as well as the power liftgate and LED headlights. Two standard colors, eight metallic, and three special paintjobs are available. Optionally, you can upgrade the ride with 19-, 20-, or 21-inch wheels.

Macan S

The first new thing on the 2021 Porsche Macan S compared to the standard edition is a more powerful drivetrain. A 3.0-liter six-cylinder unit is ready to burst 348 horsepower and 355 lb-ft of twist. The same transmission and all-wheel drive are again there. Extra power won’t harm the fuel economy. In urban areas, the gas mileage drops to 18 mpg.

Standard additions for the Macan S are 19-inch wheels and 6-piston brakes. Also, the drive system is sportier thanks to Sport and Off-Road mode. You can turn them on with buttons mounted on the control panel. Alcantara leather and 8-way seats are part of the package as well.

2021 Porsche Macan GTS

A 2.9-l twin-turbo V6 is slightly smaller displacement, but it adds 27 ponies. Also, the torque jumps to 383 pound-feet for the 2021 Porsche Macan GTS. Again, fuel economy is at a respectable level, compared to the base configuration. The GTS is returning 17/22 mpg.  Spyder wheels are standard. More interior colors are available. Leather upholstery can be upgraded with Race-Tex seats. Natural leather is a high-end option, as well as 14- and 18-way power seats. You can also pick panoramic roof, carbon or aluminum interior accents.

2021 Porsche Macan Turbo

Top of the class model is the 2021 Porsche Macan Turbo with the high-output version of a 2.7-liter engine. Engineer tuned a V6 mill to produce 435 horsepower and 405 lb-ft of twist. Extra power needs larger brakes and different tuning of a drive system. Active Suspension Management feature is standard for the Turbo version. Many high-end options are standard here, including 18-way seats, contrasting stitches, three-zone automatic climate control, and two USB ports. Safety is offering lane departure and cruise control options. Bose audio system comes with 14 speakers.

What’s Next for Porsche Macan?

The new generation of the crossover is coming in 2022. The company is going to deliver a new styling, which will make Macan more aggressive. Also, features and options will be reshuffled for the upcoming vehicle. The most important upgrade we expect is the Macan EV. The all-electric crossover will be able to go 250 miles in a single charge. Nevertheless, the sales will start in 2023 and the price will be over $80,000.

2021 Porsche Macan Release Date and Prices

The base price is the main downside of the 2021 Porsche Macan. The MSRP starts at $50,000, which is too much for the compact luxury crossover class. Just for example, BMW X3 is $42,000 and Mercedes GLC goes from the same spot. If you want Japanese premium brands, you can save $5,000 on Lexus NX, while Infiniti QX50 is slightly more expensive. Cadillac XT5 is just under $45,000. Another US carmaker is out in the market. Lincoln Nautilus will have a $41,000 price tag.

Every next upgrade will increase the cost of the 2021 Porsche Macan. S package adds $10,000 and you need to spend another $10k on the GTS version. If you are after the Macan Turbo, be ready to splash at least $100k for the ride. A few upgrades will make the crossover the most expensive model in the class.
