2025 Mazda CX5 – Third Generation Confirmed, Arriving Late Next Year

After the carryover for the 2023 YM and only a new trim level for the 2024 YM, the 2025 Mazda CX5 will bring a more serious update of the popular crossover. The redesign is going to introduce more changes than just a minor facelift. Well, it was enough as a mid-cycle update. Now, fans that wait for the 2025 CX-5 can count on numerous modifications, inside and outside.

Mazda was in the partnership with Ford. Those bonds are broken now and the Japanese company wants to use the full potential in the US market. A few new vehicles are already out. The latest addition to the lineup is the CX-50. Do not mix it with the 2025 Mazda CX5. These crossovers ride on different platforms, making a driving impression totally unique for each vehicle. In the future, enthusiasts will also see the CX-90 and even the BT50 truck.

2025 Mazda CX5 Release Date

The all-new vehicle is not coming out before the second half of 2024. Since there won’t be changes on the upcoming vehicle, the full focus is on the 2025 YM. The development has already started. The first prototypes are yet to be tested on the streets. When that happens and spy photos start emerging, we will know the release date of the 2025 Mazda CX5 is very close.

New Generation

The redesign of the 2025 Mazda CX5 is coming after 8 years. The current version is part of the second generation that arrived in 2017. Mazda made an impact with the CX5 when it was launched for the first time. The second generation was a true upgrade. Now, it is time for another step forward.

The third generation of the compact crossover comes with unique styling. The 2025 CX5 won’t copy the CX50, since it represents a sportier approach. The CX-5 will stick to the classic small SUV look. The crossover might share a thing or two with the all-new CX-90. Still, at this point it is hard to talk about the details. A few things are certain, such as keeping similar dimensions and staying in the same class.

CX5 vs CX50

Two models are sharing a very similar name and plenty of features, but yet, the CX5 and CX50 are pretty different. First of all, the price is very similar. The CX-5 can save you $500, but the 2025 YM will come with an updated MSRP (read – higher). The cargo space is similar and it will stay so, even after the redesign of the older sibling.

The CX50 is longer by 5 inches and wider by 3. It is also lower, bringing in the sporty appearance compared to the CX5. The next-gen model won’t change the classic styling. Thanks to that, we must say that handling and maneuvering of the CX50 are definitely making a difference. Both crossovers use a naturally-aspirated engine as the base powertrain, a turbo-four as an optional, and AWD is now standard. Lighter CX5 can sprint 0-60 mph faster than a lower and sportier, but heavier CX50.

2025 Mazda CX5 Signature and Other Grades, New Colors

Mazda is using well-known names for grades and it is not going to change for the all-new CX5. Even the CX50 adopted trims we got used to. So, the S is an entry-level package with a 2.5-liter engine. From there, you can add following bundles: Select, Preferred, and Premium. Later two also offer Plus upgrade. The Carbon Edition is unlikely for the 2025 YM, since it is a package for the current model intended to keep buyers busy until the new vehicle arrives.

The Turbo lineup keeps high-end trims. The new 2025 Mazda CX5 Signature will still be the most expensive configuration with unique upgrades, such as premium leather and advanced tech gadgets. The CX50 is also available with the Meridian Edition, but it is exclusive for this model and won’t be carried over to the new CX5.

2025 Mazda CX5 Specs, Hybrid Engine

The 2025 Mazda CX5 is ready to deliver a serious hybrid system. For now, only a MHEV is used, but it doesn’t improve outputs and gas mileage seriously. The crossover needs better numbers to stay competitive. For example, a 2.5-liter inline-four plant delivers 187 hp and its fuel economy is 24/30 mpg. It is poor compared to Ford Escape and Honda CR-V that will return 40 mpg combined. The good thing is that Mazda uses AWD as a standard option, but it can’t justify such bad gas mileage.

The situation is not better if you select a Turbo model. Outputs go up – 256 hp and 320 lb-ft if you use premium gas. Numbers will drop to 227 hp and 310 pound-feet with regular fuel. An 8-speed automatic transmission is a power router and engineers might revisit the gearbox. The goal of the 2025 Mazda CX5 is to improve efficiency and overall driving impression.
