2022 Mazda CX-9 changes

The future of the CX-9 is not in doubt, but we don’t have as many details about the update as for the rest of the lineup. The CX-5 is becoming the CX-50 and gets an all-electric drivetrain. Experts assume the same is going to happen with the mid-size SUV. The 2022 Mazda CX-9 will have to bring some serious changes if the company wants to stay in the game. It’s been a while since the last update. The model for 2021 is official and there are no big changes on it. So, most fans will skip the purchase, for now, waiting for the 2022YM.

The new look is certain. Only details are still unknown. We can also be sure that standard trim levels are coming back and the lineup is Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, and Signature. Mazda could add a special model or optional package, to enhance the look and ride. The SkyActiv technology is evolving. The system that makes petrol engines be efficient as diesel mills, but with reduced emissions, will be used for the all-electric unit as well. The 2022 Mazda CX-9 is quite big, so the question is if the EV is going to join the fleet so soon. We will have to see a smaller CX-50 first, whose name is still waiting for the registration by US Patent and Trademark Office.

2022 Mazda CX-9 redesign

What Will the 2022 Mazda CX-9 Look Like?

The redesign will make the 2022 Mazda CX-9 fresh and attractive. Fans are eagerly waiting for the next edition since the current styling dates back from 2016 when the current generation was introduced. The redesign details are not available yet. The company will start testing the new SUV next year. We can guess what to expect by looking at other vehicles. The new design language will enlarge the grille to make the styling bolder. Other cosmetic changes are going to include fresh headlights and taillights, and optional upgrades around the vehicle.

The interior will be under the revisit as well. A model for 2021 season updates the infotainment system. More serious changes are coming for the 2022 Mazda CX-9. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are already parts of the offer. Improved voice commands, safety equipment, and driver-aid features are the priorities for the cabin. The mid-size SUV is on the verge of becoming the full-size model. The CX-9 is just under 200 inches long. That provides enough room for passengers and cargo. The capacity inside the cabin can grow up to 71 cubic feet. This is a seven-seat SUV and there are 14 cu.ft. behind the rear row. Minor changes are expected regarding space redistribution.

SkyActive Power

Under the hood of the 2022 Mazda CX-9 will remain a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder unit. Some are impugning the drivetrain since most mid-size SUVs are using V6 mills. Still, the small block is capable to produce 250 horsepower when using premium fuel. If you tap a regular, then the outputs drop to 227 ponies. This is still underachieving for the large and heavy SUV. Mazda is not offering a V6 for its vehicles, and the CX-9 is doing a good job in the market even with a four-banger.

We assume that buyers are happy with an excellent fuel economy. It is not easy to find a mid-size model with such power and 25 mpg of combined mileage. The vehicle comes with the front-wheel drive, and some sources claim that engineers are thinking about switching to the rear-wheel drive. Anyway, the AWD remains optional and Mazda has a task to improve the mileage and off-road capacity to become more attractive in a tough segment.

Electric Model

After the CX-50, we could see the 2022 Mazda CX-9 with an electric motor. It is not a surprise, since the crossover and the SUV are sharing a turbo-four engine already. Of course, a larger model would get a battery with higher outputs and extended range. Sooner or later, this will become imminent, since the entire industry leans towards the electrification. For now, there are no too many moves. Let’s hope the arrivals of Tesla Model Y and Ford Mach E will speed up other companies, including Mazda, to create a mid-size seven-seater SUV with EV power source.

2022 Mazda CX-9 Release Date

The new model for 2021 is already out, which leaves enough time for the development of the new 2022 Mazda CX-9. The SUV is not going to be presented so soon, since the priority is the new CX-50. Still, Mazda has to take care of its wide base of fans that expect the redesign of the mid-size SUV after so many years. The competition is already making moves.

The price of the 2022 Mazda CX-9 will go up a bit. The base version might gain $2,000-3,000 in value because of changes. The high-end Signature edition comes with an AWD as standard and the price tag will exceed $50,000.
