A few years ago, Toyota and Lexus started a massive process of redesigning the entire body-on-frame, which has already brought a new generation of the Land Cruiser, LX, Tundra, Sequoia etc. Now, it’s time for the mid-size lineup. The new Tacoma has just been presented, while the 4Runner is expected in the near future as well. Finally, we count on the next-generation GX, which will probably be the last one to come. For now, the officials are still quiet but most of our reliable sources suggest that the new model will arrive in the next year, as the 2025 Lexus GX 550.
We have big expectations from the new model, which shouldn’t surprise you, considering that the current generation has been around for nearly 15 years. It is outdated in so many ways, so we are pretty sure that the novelties will be significant. This refers to all aspects of the vehicle, starting from the new platform, new powertrain, interior design, aesthetics etc.
2025 Lexus GX 550 Redesign
As mentioned, the next generation is in development and it will most likely arrive as the 2025 Lexus GX 550. At this point, the company tries to keep most details a secret. Still, some aspects of this Luxury SUV are pretty easy to predict. Of course, the platform is one of the first things that come to mind. Just like the rest of the BoF lineup, this model will also switch to the new TNGA-F platform, which will be slightly downsized compared to the LX. Still, the benefits should be the same, starting with improved ride quality.
The new platform will also allow the implementation of new technologies, whether it’s about the latest driver-assistance features or hybrid powertrain. Also, we expect to see a new, more refined suspension setup. Some sources also speculate about optional air suspension.
Exterior
As for the exterior design, we count on the implementation of the brand’s latest design language. The front-end design should mimic the full-size LX to some point, while the overall shape should remain similar to the outgoing generation. We don’t expect to see a bigger size increase, even though that would be highly beneficial in terms of passenger space. Instead, the wheelbase will remain relatively short for the segment, which will e highly beneficial in terms of off-roading potential.
Speaking of off-roading, the new 2025 Lexus GX 550 should be at least as capable as the outgoing generation. This means respectable ground clearance, along with a long list of standard and available off-road features. Four-wheel drive will certainly be standard, while you may also count on goodies like a locking differential, skid plates, crawl control, transmission cooler, Multi-Terrain monitor and many more.
Interior
The current model features pretty impressive build quality but due to the fact that it’s been around for way too long, it also looks outdated. Therefore, we expect big improvements in this aspect. The new model should bring nicer materials, along with more attractive aesthetics. Of course, a full load of the latest tech features is another thing we expect to have a big impact to the overall feel of luxury.
As for the passenger space, we presume that, as the wheelbase is about to remain very similar, things won’t be significantly different compared to the current model. The outgoing generation comes standard with three rows of seats, though the last row isn’t particularly generous with space. The cargo area, on the other hand, is average for the segment. So, we presume that the new model won’t bring drastic changes in this aspect either.
2025 Lexus GX 550 Engine
This will certainly be one of the most revolutionary aspects of the 2025 Lexus GX 550 when it comes to changes. The current model is anything but competitive when it comes to powertrain. It used a good-old V8 engine that does offer a good sound note but isn’t particularly powerful. Not only that it lacks power by today’s standards, but it is also very thirsty. You may count on no more than 15 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway.
The new generation will be significantly different. We expect to see it with a hybrid powertrain. Considering the numerification, we expect less power compared to the full-size LX. For that reason, we are pretty sure that the new hybrid powertrain would be based on a 2.4-liter turbo-four engine. The system should be pretty similar to the one that has just been presented in the new Tacoma, with 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. In this case, power and torque figures will probably go up for a bit. Other than the hybrid powertrain, we will also see a version with a 3.4-liter turbo V6. It would be the same version of the engine as in the standard Tundra, with a max output of 349 horsepower.
2025 Lexus GX 550 Release Date and Price
We expect that the 2025 Lexus GX 550 will arrive sometime in the second half of 2024. As for the price, we estimate that the new generation could start at around 60.000 dollars.
