The new generation of the compact luxury SUV arrived in 2019. Usually, we don’t see big changes until the mid-cycle update and it takes more than two seasons. But, the 2021 Acura RDX could speed up the process of development for its new versions. According to rumors, the crossover will get a hybrid drivetrain. Well, the non-premium Honda CR-V also received a similar treatment, so this is not a big surprise.
Another big news for the 2021 Acura RDX could be a performance-oriented Type S version. Well, the larger MDX is already spied with the prototype testing the PHEV system. The compact crossover is not getting such configuration, but probably a conventional, high-output petrol unit.
The base version of the RDX will start at $38,000. We recommend the famous Super-Handling All-Wheel drive. There are also few other packages available for upgrading the compact crossover to make it more appealing and reliable.
Engine and Specs
Under the hood of the 2021 Acura RDX is a high-output of a 2.0-liter turbo-four unit. The crossover gains 272 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. That is good for 1,500 pounds of towing capacity. But, the RDX will be more proud of its 0-60 mph sprint, where it takes only 6.5 seconds. A power router is a 10-speed automatic gearbox. As said, the SH-AWD is the most notable upgrade and the crossover gains extra handling, stability, and balance. On the other hand, it doesn’t consume too much more fuel. With the FWD you will get 25 mpg combined, while the AWD returns 24 mpg.
2021 Acura RDX Hybrid
We expected the RDX with the hybrid drivetrain when the crossover hit the new generation in 2019. But instead, the company added such a system to Honda CR-V. Well, even the flagship model had to wait for the 2020 season to bring this configuration to the USA, while the European version offered a hybrid drivetrain a year earlier. Could the same engine fit the 2021 Acura RDX?
As you can see, the compact crossover comes with high outputs. A 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol unit is connected to an electric battery to boosts the fuel economy. This setup can achieve 212 horsepower, which is enough for a vehicle of this size. Well, engineers could squeeze a little bit more power from the drivetrain, but don’t expect more than 230 hp. The biggest upgrade is the gas mileage since the new CR-V is going to return 42 mpg. We’ll see if the RDX can make a breakthrough with this move.
2021 Acura RDX Type S
If you don’t care too much about the gas mileage, the 2021 Acura RDX Type S will boost the power outputs. Well, this is still a concept and the company is not providing details about which vehicles are going to offer such an upgrade. Whatsoever, we expect to see the high-output model above 300 or even 350 hp. Of course, there are other special parts as well, such as exhaust tips, spoilers, suspension, etc.
What is the A-Spec Model?
The 2021 Acura RDX A-Spec is the special package for the exterior. Although its name could suggest so, the suite doesn’t have anything with performance. First of all, the A-Spec needs a Technology package to upgrade the offer. When you pick that one, you get 19-inch wheels and a lot of interior features. The A-Spec model replaces rims with 20-inch wheels, unique bumpers, LED fog lights and special trim for the grille. Additionally, buyers are getting a black rear spoiler.
Technology package will improve the interior. Premium leather upholstery and smart climate control are the highlights. Furthermore, the infotainment system also comes with extra USB ports, 12-speaker audio systems, and advanced safety features. Technology suite adds parking sensors and blind-spot monitoring.
However, the most impressive package available for the 2021 Acura RDX is Advance. Again, it builds up the Technology suite. Outside, there are unique 19-inch wheels, smart vipers and tailgate, special isolation, and fog lights. Inside, the Advance suite comes with a 10-inch screen, heated and ventilated front seats, 16-speaker audio, and surround-view system.
2021 Acura RDX Prices
The base model will cost again around $38,000. Technology package adds $3,000 and A-Spec costs the same, while the Advance suite is priced over $4,000. Well, the last two require the first upgrade. So, the heavily-loaded RDX costs $46,000, while the A-Spec is not cheaper than $44,000. For another $2,000 you can purchase the SH-AWD system.
Compact crossover class is the best-selling segment in the market. Well, the premium class is not following this trend, but it is still one of the most popular in the luxury tier. A lot of companies are competing here, and Acura will see the competition from Japanese carmakers (Lexus NX, Infiniti QX50), German giants (Audi Q5, Mercedes GLC, BMW X3), and US manufacturers (Lincoln Corsair, Cadillac XT5).
