We told you! The Type S is back with the all-new MDX SUV. The Japanese company, the luxury branch of Honda, had to do something to stay competitive with other premium models in the US market. Now, the 2022 Acura MDX Type S is going to be ready to take on the German SUVs, such as Mercedes GLE and BMW X5. Also, this is a kind of a response to the Lincoln Aviator PHEV, although MDX is not going up to a 500 horsepower rating.
Our sources confirmed some while ago, and we expected the performance-oriented version ready for the 2021 YM. But, the coronavirus outburst spoiled plans, not only to Acura but all other carmakers. They are back on track again and the 2022 Acura MDX Type S is now official. Let’s check out what does this model is going to offer to its buyers.
More Power
The Type S it the special edition. The first two things you will have on this SUV are a powerful engine and a more aggressive exterior design. Both things are there. Under the hood, we will find a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine with 355 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. Well, it is not as powerful as some high-end luxury SUVs, but this amount of power is more than enough for the luxury vehicle. Fans might be disappointed since we were writing about the PHEV edition with about 400 ponies. Don’t write it off yet, though. A 10-speed automatic transmission routes power to all four corners. The Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) is one of the best in the business and we recommend this upgrade no matter which trims level of the MDX you buy.
Just for comparison, the standard package includes a 3.5-liter V6 with 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of twist. The gas mileage was around 22 mpg combined or 21 with the SH-AWD. Do not expect a boost from the 2022 Acura MDX Type S. A hybrid is not confirmed yet for the redesigned version. It would be a shame not to see a pair of petrol engine and an electric battery that was good for 320 hp and 26 mpg in city conditions.
2022 Acura MDX Type S Exterior and Interior
Only one photo is available for now. And it shows a lot to enhance expectations from the 2022 Acura MDX Type S. It is not an ordinary version, for sure, and stylish tweaks will make it more appealing than many fans expected. The SUV features a quad exhaust system, all positioned at the corners of the rear bumper. Rear splitters are not too bold, but those are still attractive with the gloss black finishes. This is not the only part where we find such solutions since glossy details are available on the bumper and rear trim. The Type S comes with 21-inch wheels. Yellow seems like the perfect paintjob for the special edition.
The interior is also bringing even more luxurious features than the standard version. Well, the all-new MDX delivers a fresh layout and plenty of novelties. Similar materials are used and the biggest difference is the details that make the cockpit sportier. Massage function for seats is standard, for example. The sound system is provided by ELS Studio and uses 25 speakers. The noise isolation won’t keep all the engine sounds outside, but the audio with so many elements will definitely cancel the noise.
2022 Acura MDX Type S Release Date and Prices
Like said, the Type S for the SUV was initially planned for the 2021 season. But, this year, we saw no new MDX. All the changes are carried over to the redesigned SUV. Since the teaser image is out, fans are already eagerly waiting for the release date of the 2022 Acura MDX Type S. According to multiple sources, it should happen pretty soon, during this summer. The price is going to be increased for the entire lineup. The base version of the luxury SUV will stay under $50,000, though. But, with so many upgrades, the Type S will probably exceed the $60k mark. That includes a power boost and the SH-AWD system.
