Ford’s mid-size SUV is already one of the most versatile models in the market. It is a seven-seater, perfect for larger families. The SUV is going to offer a lot of power thanks to a V6 petrol engine. A hybrid is also there to improve efficiency. The 2024 Ford Explorer EV is the next step in the evolution and the first details about the electric SUV are already here. The rest of the lineup should be the same, with minor updates of the infotainment system and trim levels.
One of the things designers and engineers should find a solution for the wind noise. The base model lacks advanced features and quality materials. On the other hand, when purchasing higher trim levels, the price goes up very quickly. Engines are powerful and deliver crispy acceleration. We recommend upgrading the ride to the AWD for better handing and traction. Finally, the big SUV is very spacious, even in the third row. Still, taller passengers won’t be happy with the legroom.
Engines, Specs, ST Model
Under the hood of the standard version of the 2024 Ford Explorer will be a turbocharged 2.3-liter engine. This unit is available for all the flagship models, including the F-150 truck and legendary pony car, Mustang. The four-banger creates 300 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. The gas mileage is not impressive due to the size and weight. Still, for the mid-size class, 24 mpg is more than good. The base setup combines the powerplant with a 10-speed automatic transmission and a rear-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is optional for all trims, except the off-road oriented Timberline.
An alternative is a hybrid configuration. In this case, the system is using a 3.3-liter V6 engine and an electric motor. The power outputs jump to 318 hp and 322 lb-ft. Explorer is not getting the PHEV setup its luxurious sibling, Lincoln Aviator, is using. The gas mileage reaches 28 mpg combined. All-wheel drive harms the fuel economy.
The 2024 Ford Explorer ST is the top of the range version with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo engine. This performance model can deliver 400 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque. While the hybrid improves the mileage, this configuration enhances the performance. The Explorer ST sprints 0-60 mph in 5 seconds.
2024 Ford Explorer EV
The mid-size SUV is the next in the lineup to get an electric version. Ford is responding to the growing threat from General Motors. Details about the 2024 Explorer EV are not available yet, but it will use a similar system like the Mach E. We don’t expect the price to be too affordable, but the US company can’t push it too much. The SUV might be a rival to Tesla Model Y if the carmaker manages to take the performance to the similar level. More details about the Explorer electric will be unveiled in 2023.
Trim Levels, Options
An all-wheel drive is only one of the recommended upgrades. The 2024 Ford Explorer is going to offer plenty of other options. There are ten configurations available for the current edition. The company is going to reshuffle features and update the trim levels.
Even the base model is packed nicely, but buyers usually pick the XLT. It is still not too expensive but upgrades the entry-level version with nice equipment, such as roof rails, leather steering wheel, and heated front buckets. The ST-Line enhances the exterior look with darkened details and larger wheels. Do not mix it with the 2024 Ford Explorer ST, which is the performance edition.
One of the unique configurations in the lineup is the Timberline. This is an off-road oriented SUV with 4×4 as the standard option. Engineers revisited suspension and lifted the vehicle. That will help you in tough terrains, especially where the rocks are bigger. Skidplates protect the underbody. The limited-slip rear differential maximizes traction. Of course, some exterior and interior details are also added to make everything about the 2024 Ford Explorer Timberline so unique.
If you want to splash out, Limited, King Ranch and Platinum are premium options. Some of the options you can get are ventilated seats, more zones for climate control, extra safety options, special interior trims, premium leather upholstery, larger touchscreen display, an upgraded sound system, etc.
2024 Ford Explorer Prices
Ford should keep the current pricing of the mid-size SUV. The base model is already one of the most expensive options in the segment with a starting MSRP of $37,000. The XLT is already above $40k. Around $50,000 we find a few options, such as ST Line, Timberline and ST. Hybrid engines are available in the combination with Limited and Platinum trims. Such versions cost $55,000.
The EV won’t be cheap. The company is using unique technology and the price is definitely not starting under $50,000, and that is the best prediction. It is more likely to see it higher, especially if the batteries can deliver extended range.
